Find out about the role that Hilton Head Island played during the Civil War and the founding of Historic Mitchelville. Mitchelville was the first self-governed town for the formerly enslaved. It had a mayor, councilmen, and other officers. Mitchelville also established the first compulsory education law in South Carolina. He will focus on the history, Gullah culture, and the important role the town played in nurturing freedom with dignity and respect. He plans to tell us about upcoming activities and celebrations at the park (Juneteenth).

Ahmad Ward is a skilled public speaker and subject matter expert with a focus on Civil Rights, Human Rights, African American History, and contemporary social justice issues, featured on MSNBC, C-Span, and other media.
